Connecting to your Internet ProviderWhen your modem was installed, based upon the selections you made for your ISP or DSL provider, the proper software for the operation of your modem was set up. Normally, there will be nothing further required from you to use your modem for connecting to their service. Reference your providers documentation to see if this is the case and to learn how to connect to their service. Microsoft Dial-up NetworkingThis information only applies if your modem was installed to use Microsoft Windows Dial-up Networking to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Note that some providers will use Dial-up Networking to connect to their service, but will not require that your modem be dialed using it. This is normally the case if the provider is using PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE). If you need to dial your modem to connect to your provider then you may find the need to modify that connection or create another one. Your Internet Service Provider should give you all of the necessary information for a Dial-Up connection. Modifying or Changing the Values of a Dial-up Connection Connecting (Dialing) to a Dial-Up Connection Creating a Dial-up ConnectionThis may not follow the pattern exactly for Dial-Up Networking, as there are variances between the Dial-Up Networking screens on the different versions of Windows. Open Microsoft Windows Dial-Up Networking. This can be done through the Start menu, by selecting Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Dial-Up Networking, or by clicking on the My Computer icon, and then clicking on the Dial-Up Networking icon, which may be show as either of the following two icons. Click on the icon for Make New Connection. This opens the following window. Type in a name to identify the connection. This can be anything you choose. Select the 3Com PCIA DSL Line 0 or 1 from the drop down list "Select a device" . Press the Next button, which displays the following screen. In the Telephone number field, enter the VCI value given to you by your Service Provider. Since you are establishing an ADSL connection, you will not use a standard telephone number. Instead, the VCI value you enter here will be used in conjunction with the VPI value you entered during setup of the modem in order to establish the connection. Press the Next button to complete the definition of the Service Profile connection. Modifying or Changing the values of a Dial-up ConnectionTo further modify the options that you're Dial-up Connection is using, open the connection by selecting its Properties. This is done, by highlighting the connection in the Dial-up Networking Folder and then either choose Properties from the File menu, or right-click the mouse and select Properties from the menu.
General Properties Tab The General properties screen allows you to choose/change the Modem you are using for the connection and allows you to change the phone number.
Telephone number This field should be set to the VCI for your connection. Use area code and Dialing Properties This check box should NOT be checked. If it is, it may be modifying the Telephone number field And therefore changing your VCI to something else. Connect using This list box allows you to change the name of the modem you are using to connect with. For Your 3Com ADSL Modem you have two choices. They are 3Com PCIA DSL Line 0 and 3Com PCIA DSL Line 1. See configuring multiple connections in this section for more details. Server Types Tab The Server Types properties screen is used to set various options related to your connection and to define the protocols you wish to use for talking to the computer you are dialing. Advanced Options You want to check the boxes to Log on to Network, and also to Enable software compression. Allowed Network Protocols If you are connecting to the Internet then you will need to have the TCP/IP option checked as shown above. In general, unless you have been told otherwise from your Internet Provider or Systems Administrator, this is the only option that you should have checked when connecting to the Internet. IPX/SPX is used if you are connecting to a Novell Netware LAN, and Netbeui refers to Microsoft Networking. The TCP/IP Settings button allows you to configure your specific TCP/IP settings for this connection. This opens the following window. Unless instructed by the Service Provider who gives you access to the Internet, do not change any of these values. Scripting Tab Unless instructed by your Service Provider there is nothing here to modify or change. Multilink Unless instructed by your Service Provider there is nothing here to modify or change. Dialing a ConnectionTo connect to your Network Provider, open up the Dial-Up Networking window, and double-click on the connection you have defined. Enter in the User name and the Password assigned to you by your service provider who gives you access to the Internet. The Phone Number should be the VCI your service provider has given you to establish a DSL connection. Once you have entered in the User Name and Password, press the Connect button to make the call. |
