Mathemania Basics

Mathemania can create sheets that...

You can orient the page either vertically (portrait) or horizontally (landscape) and change the number of problems across (columns) and down (rows). You can also have all problem types share a single numeric difficulty range to save time, or specify each number range individually for more control.

To create a sheet:

Step 1

Choose File > New Sheet... or click the "New Sheet..." button

Step 2

Enter the number of problems across and down. The problems will be automatically sized to fit the page, but you can improve the legibility of the page by careful choosing your dimensions.

Tip:If you expect to use the horizontal problem style (i.e. 1 x 4 = ?), you should use more problems down than across. Conversely, if you expect to use the vertical problem style, have more problems across than down. If you will be mixing both styles you may need to try a few different quantities to get the desired appearance.

Step 3

A typical sheet uses the Landscape (horizontal) page orientation, but if you wish to use Portrait style choose that now.

Click "Continue."

Step 4

Choose one or more operation types to include on the page.

If you would like to use the same difficulty and problem style (horizontal / vertical) for all operations, select "Use the same number range for all types".

Click "Continue."

Step 5

For each problem type, you specify three number ranges that will determine the difficulty of the problems generated for the sheet. Mathemania will only select problems that satisfy all your specifications for the first, second, and answer number ranges.

Tip: If you don't care about one range, you can simply specify some very large range (such as zero to 100) and Mathemania will effectively ignore it. For example if you choose addition from 1 to 9, 1 to 9, and 0 to 500, you will end up with problems with answers from 2 to 18.

Step 6

Choose whether you want horizontal problems, vertical problems, or both.

Choose "Continue" and repeat for the other problem types. Then click "Finish."

Step 7

Now you are looking at your first Mathemania sheet! You can print it by choosing File > Print. If you want to see the corresponding Answer Key, choose Sheet > Show Answer Key. You can print that by choosing File > Print as well.

If you are unsatisfied with how the sheet looks, choose Sheet > Change Problem Types & Ranges to modify your settings. In particular, if you see a lot of similar and/or repeated numbers, you should increase your number ranges or exclude ones (i.e. if you were doing division from 1 to 10, do division 2 to 10 instead. You can add some divide by one problems manually afterwards if desired. Simply double-click on any problem on the sheet to edit it.)

Tip: If you are annoyed by the Mathemania footer on the printed page, go to Mathemania > Preferences (Help > Preferences on Windows) and disable it.

That's it for this portion of the tutorial. If you would like to gain more control over the appearance of your sheets, click the link below to go to the next section.
